Entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, has sent shockwaves through the tech and crypto communities by warning Apple that he may restrict the use of Apple devices at Tesla if the company integrates OpenAI into its operating system.

Musk, known for his concerns regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) risks, made this statement amidst speculations that Apple might incorporate OpenAI’s capabilities in future releases of its iOS and macOS operating systems.

Apple’s Embrace of AI Raises Security Questions

During the Worldwide Developers Conference WWDC 2024, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, a new set of generative AI features. The tech giant also announced the use of ChatGPT from OpenAI with Siri, providing users with the option to utilize it. This integration marks a significant redesign of Apple’s digital assistant since its inception in 2011.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, mentioned that Siri’s support for ChatGPT aims to enhance user experience without compromising their privacy. The integration will be available in macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18, with promises of incorporating more AI models from external sources.

Apple assures that its cloud-based models on Apple Silicon will prioritize user privacy by securely transmitting minimal data when necessary. Despite Apple’s security measures, Musk remains adamant about his companies not allowing Apple devices if OpenAI integration at the OS level proceeds.

Musk’s opposition stems from the perceived security breach he associates with OpenAI integration. His stance highlights the escalating friction between established tech corporations and cryptocurrency advocates advocating for decentralized, user-focused approaches.

Security and User Privacy Concerns

Musk further criticized Apple, questioning their reliance on OpenAI for AI capabilities. He expressed doubts about OpenAI’s ability to safeguard user data, warning of potential risks to privacy and security if data were sent to OpenAI without proper oversight. Musk’s concerns extend to the impact on user safety and data privacy, particularly in the realm of cryptocurrency transactions.

The potential introduction of OpenAI into Apple’s ecosystem raises apprehensions about increased data surveillance, which could threaten the anonymity and peer-to-peer characteristics vital to cryptocurrency operations.
