Music icon Doja Cat fell victim to a hack on her X (formerly Twitter) account, where cybercriminals promoted a fake Solana-based meme coin named “DOJA.”
This event sheds light on the trend of scammers using popular social media platforms like X to push crypto scams. It emphasizes the need for users to be cautious when dealing with digital assets and to validate the legitimacy of investment opportunities, especially those endorsed on celebrity accounts.
Fake “DOJA” Memecoin Creates Stir in Solana Community
Doja Cat, with a massive following of over 5.6 million on her X account, was targeted by hackers who exploited her popularity to promote a scam meme coin inspired by her name on the Solana blockchain. Fans of Doja Cat realized the breach when unauthorized posts promoting the new meme coin started appearing on her account.
Capitalizing on Doja’s influence and large social media presence, the hackers manipulated her followers by sharing false information and links, urging them to invest in the fraudulent cryptocurrency DOJA post-compromise.
The initial post depicted a picture of DOJA with a knife and the message “Buy DOJA or else,” alongside a link offering the fake Solana coin. Subsequently, the hacker removed Doja Cat’s bio and profile picture from her account and posted more than twenty additional posts to lure her fans.
In contrast to previous incidents involving other celebrities like 50 Cent and Hulk Hogan, Doja Cat’s followers did not fall for the hacker’s ploy, thus thwarting the criminal’s expectations. The prompt action taken by Doja to alert her followers about the hack also played a crucial role in this outcome.
A few hours later, the music star turned to her Instagram account to address the situation after her followers raised concerns. She clarified, “It’s not me, it’s an imposter. Please don’t believe whoever that was, okay? It was someone else,” dispelling any doubts.
Rising Threat of Celebrities’ Profiles Being Targeted by Hackers
Doja Cat’s X account breach is part of a broader pattern where cybercriminals exploit celebrities’ social media profiles to promote fake tokens within the evolving cryptocurrency realm. This incident occurred shortly after actress Sydney Sweeney also encountered a similar attack.
The hackers commandeered Sweeney’s X account to endorse a meme coin named “SWEENEY” on the Solana network. However, her team promptly intervened, reclaiming control of her account to prevent further damage.
