Recently, Sydney Sweeney, a rising Hollywood actress, was a victim of a cybersecurity breach where her X account was compromised to endorse a phony Solana-based meme coin named “SWEENEY” to deceive unsuspecting followers.
Fraudulent SWEENEY Coin Introduced in Crypto Market
Sydney Sweeney was added to the list of celebrities whose social media accounts have been hacked to advertise questionable cryptocurrency tokens, following similar incidents involving personalities like 50 Cent and Hulk Hogan.
As a result of the breach, fake posts were shared, luring Sweeney’s audience to invest in the bogus cryptocurrency SWEENEY, leveraging her influence and massive social media presence. The posts contained false promises and redirects to a website selling the fabricated Solana meme coin.
Immediately taking action, Sweeney’s team regained control of her account and removed the misleading posts, thwarting the cybercriminals’ attempt.
The fraudulent meme coin experienced a rapid surge in trading, accumulating over $10 million within a short period, only to plummet by approximately 90% in value once the deceptive posts were deleted.
This is not the first time Sydney Sweeney’s X account has been manipulated for promoting fake tokens, as a similar incident occurred earlier in the year with a different Solana meme currency.
Potential Attacks on Hollywood Figures
Within a short span, Sydney Sweeney becomes the second Hollywood figure to be targeted by hackers. Previously, in April, actor Tom Holland, famously known for his portrayal of Spider-Man, had his X account breached.
During Tom Holland’s breach, hackers claimed Spider-Man’s involvement in establishing “Spiderverse” with Binance, leveraging the actor’s massive following to promote their scheme.
These breaches highlight the alarming trend of cybercriminals exploiting prominent social media figures to endorse fraudulent cryptocurrency ventures, underscoring the importance of exercising caution and verifying investment opportunities, especially those endorsed on celebrity profiles.
